Website Ranking Basics

Website ranking is a broad idea. It may refer to search result positions for specific keywords, global traffic estimates, category visibility, or comparative popularity.

Rank is context dependent

A site can rank well for one keyword and poorly for another. A global traffic rank is different from keyword ranking, local ranking, or branded search performance.

Traffic and ranking are related but not identical

High rankings can drive traffic, but traffic can also come from ads, social media, referrals, email, and direct visits. A good analysis separates these sources.

Use multiple signals

Search Console, analytics, rank trackers, backlink tools, and manual content review all provide different perspectives. No single metric tells the whole story.
